Empowering the Future: Ytrebygda Girls Shine at EasyBasket Event

The atmosphere was electric at Ytrebygda Basketball Club’s recent EasyBasket event, as the girls' team, under the passionate guidance of coach Pol Olivier, delivered an unforgettable performance. Pol, who doubles as a professional player for Fyllingen Lions, has been a driving force behind the development of these young athletes. His dedication and love for basketball is always expressed, fostering a positive and inclusive environment in the club.

This EasyBasket event exemplified the values behind Norway’s Basketball Federation's (NBBF) flagship program for children. Developed to ensure holistic athletic development and an enjoyable sports experience, EasyBasket offers both in-club activities and events organized by NBBF and regional associations. The program’s emphasis on inclusion, fun, and skill-building created a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Adding to the excitement of the day, several of Pol’s teammates from the Fyllingen Lions were present to cheer on the girls. Ibu Jassey Demba, Eric Etienne Fongue, Joel Kanyinda (Big Joe), Haji Jawara, Peter Bullock, and Bouna Black N’Diaye brought their support, creating an uplifting energy in the hall. Their presence not only motivated the young players but also demonstrated how basketball bridges players and clubs across skill levels and age groups.

Team manager Diana Steinberga and coach Pol Olivier are pillars of the Ytrebygda Basketball Club’s community, working tirelessly to empower the girls both on and off the court. This commitment aligns with the Norwegian Basketball Federation's Basketplan 28, a strategic initiative prioritizing the growth of girls’ basketball.

The NBBF has set a bold target of doubling the number of female players in Norway from 4,500 to 9,000 by 2028. At a recent meeting, Basketball Federation President Jan Hendrik Parmann emphasized this mission:

β€œWe’re seeing promising growth among girls, especially in the younger categories, but it still doesn’t match the boys’ numbers. That’s why women’s basketball is a cornerstone of Basketplan 28.”

Ytrebygda Basketball Club exemplifies how this vision can be achieved. With passionate coaches like Pol Olivier, a supportive community, and role models like the Fyllingen Lions players, the club is laying the foundation for future basketball stars and inspiring more girls to embrace the sport.

Here’s to Ytrebygda and their incredible girls’ team – the future of Norwegian basketball looks bright!

Go Ytrebygda, and go girls!
